Core Cover
Receive a payout for the treatment itself, but not for additional aspects such as diagnostic tests and consultations.
How does health insurance work?
Private health insurance functions like any other type of insurance—you pay a monthly or annual premium in exchange for coverage.
Your policy will include an excess, which is the amount you agree to pay toward any claim. In return, your insurer covers the remaining cost of private medical treatment, helping you avoid large out-of-pocket expenses or long NHS waiting times.
For example, if your excess is £200 and you require treatment costing £1,500, you would pay the first £200, and your insurer would cover the remaining £1,300, subject to any policy limits.
In many cases, you’ll only need to pay your excess once per policy year on your first eligible claim, though this varies between insurers. Always check the terms before committing to a plan.
You can usually choose an excess that fits your budget. A higher excess lowers your monthly premiums but increases the amount you pay if you claim, while a lower excess means higher premiums but reduced costs when seeking treatment.
