Vitality Health Insurance

Vitality was formally known as PruHealth before rebranding in 2014. The last few years have seen Vitality ramp up their marketing, with their brand becoming more distinctive – you’ll probably recognise their dachshund mascot.

Incentivising members to be healthier is a core value for Vitality and one of the ways they achieve this is by offering members discounts and rewards on a variety of health-focused care and accessories.

As well as offering discounts and rewards through their partners, members can also receive a discount on their renewal premium by staying active and healthy. By recording activities on fitness devices such as Apple watch or Garmin, Vitality will take this data into consideration when calculating renewal premiums.

Vitality health insurance policy review

The “Personal Healthcare” policy is their main medical insurance policy. It covers inpatient treatment in full as well as comprehensive cancer cover as a standard benefit. The additional options available make the Personal Healthcare policy one of the most versatile on the market and allows members to tailor a policy to their needs or budget.

The additional benefits offered with Vitality’s partners and rewards also enable clients to get rewarded from their insurance even if they don’t need to claim.

Things you may wish to consider

Vitality offers several outpatient options to choose from. If you don’t include full cover for consultations and diagnostic tests, you can still opt for full cover for diagnostic tests and only limit cover for consultations.

Vitality will cover in-network physiotherapy in full as standard when their health insurance customer selects any outpatient cover.

Vitality offers a very attractive rewards and partners programme, with premium discounts on anything from a gym membership, hotel stays, and the latest fitness devices from brands like Apple.

Vitality offers three different hospital lists to suit varying needs and budgets.

On switch terms, they will offer to beat any other recognised health insurance provider’s policy cost by up to 12% and match or upgrade the level of cover you have in place.

Vitality do not have a “no claims discount”. Their pricing structure instead uses an ABC pricing system (Age, Base Rate, Claims and Engagement). By staying active and engaging with the Vitality program, clients can minimise the impact of a claim on their insurance.

There is limited cover for pre-existing mental health.

About Vitality health insurance

Formerly known as PruHealth before rebranding in 2014, Vitality has become one of the most recognisable private healthcare providers in the UK. That’s thanks to their bold and distinctive advertising campaign featuring their mascot, Stanley the dachshund.

Vitality’s health insurance coverage has been awarded five stars from Defaqto, an industry reviewer that is recognised by professionals in both the financial services and consumer services industry. The review is based on factual analysis of a policy, rather than anything subjective such as consumer reviews. Vitality has received top marks since 2012.

For a financial product to be awarded five stars, it means it has been rated as “excellent” by the industry professionals working for Defaqto, and the policy has a comprehensive range of benefits and features.

Vitality has also been awarded five stars by Moneyfacts for their private healthcare offering. Moneyfacts is another financial industry review body that is independently owned and entirely impartial.

Lower your premiums by staying active

One of the key and most attractive features about Vitality’s healthcare policies is the ability to positively affect the price by staying active and healthy across the duration of your policy. By inputting data from your smart fitness devices, you can demonstrate that you are actively taking care of your physical health.

This is part of Vitality’s “Healthy Living Plan”, where you can do regular healthy activities that will improve your “Vitality Status”. Another thing you can do is undertake a yearly health check, to get a more detailed analysis of your health.

You accrue “Vitality points” across the duration of your policy. The amount you accrue will help determine the renewal cost of your premium.

Virtual GP access

Vitality have their own virtual GP services to help you get seen by a medical professional quickly at a time that suits you. You can use their platform to book an appointment and get advice on a medical issue 24/7.

The service will allow you to quickly get a referral to a specialist if needed. You can also use the platform to refer yourself for physiotherapy or to request mental health support from a specialist. If you need a prescription, this will be sent digitally to your local pharmacy for you to collect.

Doctor’s appointments booked through this service do not count as a claim and so will not affect the price of your premium.

Mental health cover

If you have a pre-existing mental health condition that you would like treated through a Vitality health policy, then you can get up to 8 sessions as part of the core cover. If you require more, then you will need to tailor your coverage to match. Speak to one of our experts to ensure the healthcare coverage you get is exactly tailored to your needs.

Bluecrest health screenings

If there is a history of certain illnesses in your family, or you simply want a more comprehensive view of your overall health, then you might want to have a screening by a specialist healthcare company.

As part of your coverage with Vitality, you can get up to 81% discount from Bluecrest Health Screenings. Billed as an MOT for your body, these screenings can help give you a detailed overview of your physical condition. It can also flag any issues that you may want to get further advice on or seek treatment for.
