The Exeter Health Insurance
The Exeter is a private health insurance provider established in 1927 that has strong roots in the consumer protection industry. As a mutual society, The Exeter reinvests profits back into the company, prioritising its members over shareholders. This allows them to offer high-value, competitively priced plans that consistently receive five-star ratings on Trustpilot and Defaqto.
If you’re exploring health insurance in the UK, The Exeter may be less well-known than some larger brands, but it stands out for its high-quality service, flexibility, and excellent customer satisfaction. Their flagship product, the Health+ private health insurance policy, delivers a comprehensive range of benefits and options to suit different needs and budgets.

The Exeter offers access to the Healthwise App for their members, giving access to a wide range of additional benefits.

About The Exeter health insurance
Established in 1927, the key feature of The Exeter is that it’s a mutual rather than a privately held company. Every policyholder becomes a member, rather than just a customer. It also means any profit is put back into the company to benefit the members, rather than prioritising dividends for shareholders.
The Exeter’s Health+ private health insurance policy has been given five stars from Defaqto, a financial services reviewer that is recognised by financial services and consumer services professionals across the sector. Defaqto conduct their review through a factual analysis, rather than looking at anything subjective like customer reviews.
For a financial product to be given the full five stars by Defaqto, it means it has been rated as “excellent” by the industry professionals conducting their review, and the policy comes with a comprehensive range of quality benefits and features.
The Exter is also one of the few private health insurance providers to be awarded 5 stars by their customers on Trustpilot. One of the UK’s leading consumer review websites, only verified customers are able to leave a review of a company, service or product.
Digital GP access
Being able to get an appointment with a GP at a time convenient to you is one of the big benefits of private health insurance. The Exeter provide this through a digital GP service using the HealthWise App.
If you need to book an appointment, simply open the app and arrange one at a time that’s convenient to you. Should you need a further consultation or a referral, this will be arranged as part of the appointment.
HealthWise App
In some circumstances, you may be unsure about the advice you have been given by a medical professional. Using The Exeter’s HealthWise App, you have access to up to two second opinion consultations. So you can ask another doctor or consultant to take a look to see if they can offer any alternative advice or diagnoses.
Complete cancer cover
As part of The Exeter’s Health+ policy, you will be provided with complete cancer cover. That includes treatment and care for all stages of cancer, and access to the latest cancer treatment drugs, some of which will not be available on the NHS.
No limits on inpatient treatment
Unlike some providers, there is no day limit on the amount of inpatient treatment the policy will cover. If you need to be in hospital for an extended period of time, it will be covered by The Exeter.
Ambulances and nursing
If you need to travel to hospital for treatment, or have to be moved from one to another, The Exeter will provide a private ambulance to transport you to, between or from hospital. One less thing to worry about.
After you’ve been discharged from hospital, you may still need some care. Home nursing is available to both day and inpatients following treatment, should it be required.
Accommodation for parents
If your child (up to the age of 18) is in need of treatment at hospital and you need to find accommodation nearby, The Exeter will cover this for you, for as long as it’s needed. Peace of mind at what can be a very stressful time.
NHS cash benefit
Getting you the right treatment as quickly as possible is the priority for most private health insurance providers. That can sometimes mean free inpatient treatment with the NHS is the best option. If that’s the case, The Exeter will provide you with £150 a night, if that treatment would have been covered under your policy.
