Bupa Health Insurance
Bupa is one of the UK’s most established health insurance providers. Bupa doesn’t just concentrate on providing excellent health insurance cover, they are also dedicated to helping people lead longer, healthier and happier lives.
Bupa offers a couple of policies to suit different customer needs, which are:
Bupa By You (comprehensive cover)
Bupa Treatment and Care (in or day patient only)
New Benefit: With effect from 1st August 2024, Bupa will offer all new and existing customers a dental allowance as part of their core cover. This entitles everyone covered in the policy to one dental appointment each year at a participating Bupa Dental Care practice.
Bupa health insurance policy review
The “Bupa By You” comprehensive healthcare policy is their flagship policy for domestic private medical insurance in the UK. However, Bupa also offers a “Treatment and Care” policy, as well as a “Bupa Fundamentals” policy. Each of the three policies offer various levels of cover and are offered at different price points to accommodate the needs of a range of clients.
Things you may wish to consider
Bupa do not have age restrictions on their policy and unlike some other providers you can join Bupa regardless of your age
Bupa automatically upgrade anyone under the age of 17 to their most comprehensive hospital list free of charge.
Bupa apply an increase to the price of their premium for anyone who has used nicotine products within the last two years.
Unless you have full outpatient cover, you would have a combined financial limit of £500, £750 or £1,000 for consultations and minor diagnostic tests such as blood tests, X-rays, and ultrasounds. Diagnostic tests can be expensive and unpredictable, and typically it’s advised to cover these in full.

About Bupa health insurance
Bupa was first established in 1947 when a group of seventeen provident associations came together to form a new health insurance provider to help give affordable, quality healthcare to customers. Since then, the company has grown internationally, providing private health insurance, health centre and care home services in Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Chile and many more countries across the globe.
Bupa’s “Bupa For You” comprehensive health insurance policy has been given a five-star rating from Defaqto, an independent financial industry review company recognised by consumer and financial service professionals. The score is based on an analysis of the product, not Bupa in general, and is based on a factual review.
For a financial product to be awarded a five-star rating, it means it has been rated as “excellent” by the independent analysis and comes with a comprehensive range of benefits and features.
Bupa are also the only UK private health insurer to be rated “good” by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the body that regulates all adult and social care in England. This rating is primarily related to the quality of their telephone services, with their operators being recognised for their speed, compassion and effectiveness, among other factors.
Alongside these industry reviews, Bupa has also been awarded a 4.1 out of 5 score on Trustpilot, based on independent and verified customer reviews.
Access to highly rated health facilities
As a Bupa policy holder, you will have access to a wide range of private healthcare facilities across the UK, providing top quality care in a timely manner. This includes many facilities operated by BMI, Nuffield Health, and Spire Health.
These private hospitals and healthcare centres include some of the best-rated in the country, so you can be assured you’ll get top quality treatment with the facility is Bupa-branded or one of their partners.
24/7 access to Bupa Anytime HealthLine
Bupa’s Anytime Healthline telephone is a phone service available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to all Bupa policy holders and their immediate family. You can contact and speak to a nurse about a wide range of different conditions and symptoms and get the advice you need for peace of mind.
If, after an initial consultation, it’s decided you need to speak to a GP, then a call back will be booked in for you. You can be assured that you will be provided with the advice and assistance you need to ensure any serious conditions are diagnosed and dealt with correctly.
Calls to the Bupa Anytime HealthLine do not count as a claim and they won’t affect your policy now or when the time comes to renew.
Family discounts
If you decide to add your partner or children to the policy, or get them their own individual cover, then there are discounts available. Your partner can get 5% off the cost of their policy, and there is a 10% discount for a family policy. Speak to one of our experts to get advice on the exact cost and coverage available to you.
Access to the latest cancer treatments
While we don’t like to think about it, should someone be diagnosed with cancer, then they will want to be certain that they will have access to the latest, most effective treatments. Private health coverage with cancer insurance at Bupa will give you access to these treatments, even if they are not currently offered on the NHS.
Being approved for use on the NHS can often be a long and complicated process as they undertake the evaluations and reviews required. While these checks and balances are important, it can lead to delays to proven, effective treatment being offered. Private healthcare coverage from Bupa allows you quicker access to these treatments.
Digital GP appointments with Babylon Health
When you need to speak to a GP, you don’t always need an in person consultation. And, if you are away or busy at work, a digital appointment can be quicker and more suitable. Bupa health insurance provides access to Digital GP appointments with Babylon Health.
Appointments are available 24/7 and are free (subject to your policy). As well as speaking to a doctor, you can also speak to a nurse or a pharmacist too. If needed, you can get a referral or a prescription issued and delivered direct to you.
