AXA Health Insurance

AXA Health’s Personal Health policy is their flagship policy for domestic private medical insurance in the UK. The Personal Health core cover includes inpatient treatment as standard. Clients also benefit from access to an extensive hospital network of over 250 hospitals nationwide. In addition to the core cover, there are several other options available to choose from.

Things You May Wish to Consider

If you are looking for family healthcare cover and one or more members has had cancer treatment or follow-ups in the last five years before the join date, AXA will downgrade all members on the policy to NHS Cancer support. If you find yourself in this position, one solution is to split the policy up.

Claiming on AXA Health’s Therapies benefit doesn’t affect your No Claims Discount (NCD) at renewal.

AXA Health will increase the price of a members premium if, when joining AXA Health, the client has had any of the following in the last five years:

  • Heart Conditions or Heart Problems
  • Strokes
  • Cancers
  • Diabetes
  • Mental Health Conditions

AXA also apply an increase in the price of the premium for anyone who has used nicotine products within the last two years.

At renewal, AXA Health offer the option of a ‘claims buyback’. If the increase in your renewal exceeds the value of your claim, you would have the option to pay the value of your claim and retain your no claims discount.

If you have a heart condition and were unable to change health insurers, AXA Health may be an option for you. If the condition is under control with medication and reviewed by your GP and not a cardiologist then, in most circumstances, you will be able to switch with no exclusions.

If you have made more than three claims in the last five years, you cannot switch to AXA Health.

AXA also allow over-age dependents to continue having access to their cover if they live at the same address as the policy holder.

About AXA Health Insurance

What would become AXA Health Insurance was first founded in 1940, making the provider older than the NHS. It started out as the Association for Hospital Services and was created with the aim of helping people get quick access to expert medical care. In 1999, the AXA Insurance Group purchased the company, bringing it under their AXA umbrella.

A large part of what AXA Health do is invest in medical research. In fact, they set up their first fund for research in 1975. They also introduced dedicated heart and cancer nurses to help provide additional specialist support for those going through these often difficult periods of treatment.

Doctor at Hand Digital Appointment Service

AXA Health’s Doctor At Hand is their dedicated digital appointment service, providing access to a medical professional 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Both GPs and Advanced Nurse Practitioners are available to offer advice, issue prescriptions, and refer you for tests. All appointments are up to 20 minutes, giving you more time to talk through your health concerns then you might with a normal doctor’s appointment.

Access to Approved Cancer Drugs

If you are diagnosed with cancer while being covered for cancer treatment with AXA Health Insurance, then you will be given access to approved cancer drugs that may not yet be available on the NHS. Should the cancer specialist treating you decide that you require a certain drug, then you will be given access to the treatment.

Coverage for The Entire Family

When you have a policy with AXA Health Insurance, you can get enhanced family and children’s health insurance as an option for your coverage. So if you want to get added protection for your family, then this could be the ideal option for you. Axa Health also provide healthcare coverage for free for newborns, meaning your child will be given added protection at their most vulnerable age.

AXA Health at Hand

If you need medical advice or have a question about any treatment you are currently having, AXA Health Insurance have set up a dedicated helpline where you can speak with a nurse or counsellor 24/7. Similar to the NHS 111 service but without the long waiting times, you can ask about symptoms for you and your family members.

The helpline also has access to midwives and pharmacists across a range of opening hours across the week, so if you have a question about your pregnancy or the medication you are taking, you can get quick access to advice.

For all private healthcare policy holders, you can ask questions relating to the health of you family members without paying any additional costs. So if your child has a sudden spike in temperature, you don’t have to wait around to get advice on what to do to help them.
